Animal Collective vs. Ruby Isle - elbo.ws 2.4

The elbo.ws chart has been stubborn these past weeks. The number one spot has been firmly held by Bon Iver with an occasional track popping up to occupy #1 for a few hours. Because of this, we decided to change things up and cover the number one band on the elbo.ws Hot Artists list. That band is Animal Collective. They have held the top spot on that chart for over two weeks now. We decided to cover My Girls, the song that has been hanging around the top tracks chart for a while now. We totally dig this song, so it has been fun de- and reconstructing it.

The original song has a very odd structure and phrasing which made it a bit of a challenge to vocoderize. Mallman had some fun creating a hook out of the “…for my girls” refrain that helped give the song some ppppop.

It looks like the chart is starting to change quite a bit so your guess is as good as ours as to what we will be covering next week, but until then; enjoy!

like Ryan Lewis, India now hates the Black Lips Too

i saw Slumdog Millionaire this weekend. it fucking rules and is worthy of all the awards and press it’s getting. ironically at the same time i was seeing a movie about how shitty it is to grow up in the Mumbai slums, Atlanta’s own Black Lips were in India getting their asses run out of the country!

they’ve come a long way from that time i booked them at the 40 Watt and they got banned for trying to set their drums on fire, but they’re still a bunch of punkass kids who like to start trouble. i hope they made it out alive, as they are one of the only about 4 bands from the state of Georgia who are worth a shit.

Bears

I’ve been thinking about starting a new blog lately, but then I realized: Oh shit! I already have one!

So, here’s some stuff:

I’ve started playing Call of Duty 4 on teh xboxzorz. Yeah, I could not be more late to the party. In fact, it might actually be retro soon. I’m ahead of the curve! Or something. Anyways, I am getting my ass kicked repeatedly, but the game doling out XP for just playing matches makes it more bearable. It’s been pretty fun, but I prolly won’t be in it for the full level 55, let alone presige mode. You know what the game needs though? More bears. That would make it even more bearable. *ba-dum-ching!* I’ll be here all week, folks.

The Decemberists vs. Ruby Isle Elbows 2.3

Week 3 of the elbo.ws project has arrived and we almost got to cover another Bon Iver track. Blood Bank by Bon Iver has been holding the top spot since last week when Skinny Love (also by Bon Iver) fell from number one. It would seem people really like Bon Iver, as do we. However, The Decemberists’ The Rake’s Song came on strong all week and finally took over the number one spot briefly this Sunday when we started recording. We decided to go with The Decemberists’ track to keep things fresh and thus The Rake’s Song is this week’s elbo.ws track.

We came at this one from two very different angles. I envisioned this one sounding like Yaz’s Situation and laid down a hooky 80s synth as the lead and kept it going with some fuzzy retro synth bass. Once Mallman got his hands on it, he took it in a very different direction giving it some modern production and a MGMT inspired chorus. The result probably doesn’t sound like any of these bands, and least of all like the original. We had some fun with this one.

We really enjoy doing these covers as they are pretty challenging since so far they have been pretty far from our sound and we are only giving ourselves a day to finish the recordings. The reaction to this project has also been really fun to watch. A lot of people seem to be taking these covers personally. I guess there has been a lot of attachment built up to the past two originals as they were probably two of the most popular tracks on elbo.ws last year. This one is new, so it will be interesting to see the reaction to a song that isn’t even released yet.

This week also brings a new video installment to the series. If you haven’t figured it out yet, there is a story evolving here. Only Mallman knows where it is going, so stay tuned to see what happens to our hero, The Pink Gorilla.

Once again they go in threes

In the past week or so the world has lost 3 great entertainers… Ron Ashton of the Stooges, Ricardo “KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNN” Montalban and Patrick McGoohan of the classic British TV series The Prisoner.

Sad times. I have a lot more to say on each of them but really no time to say it but trust me, I wouldn’t be who I am without having been exposed to Ashton’s guitar playing on the Stooges first album.
